4. Why Buyers Prefer Yiwu

Buyers favor Yiwu for its low prices, concentrated suppliers, comprehensive categories, and convenient logistics. Located in eastern Zhejiang, Yiwu neighbors the industrial chains of the Yangtze and Pearl River Deltas, currently hosting 2.1 million production factories.

Yiwu is renowned for its highly efficient small factories. For example, 80% of the world's Christmas decorations are produced here. The supply chain efficiency—from raw materials to finished products to global shipping—is unmatched.

With proximity to the top-three Ningbo-Zhoushan and Shanghai ports, combined with the Yixin'ou Railway, freight transportation is exceptionally convenient. While not every single item is the cheapest, the overall procurement cost and efficiency are the lowest. With similar suppliers clustered together offering thousands of styles, you can quickly compare prices, inspect samples, place orders, and arrange shipping—all in one trip. This one-stop experience saves time and money, a convenience unmatched by other cities. Even Guangzhou's markets are more scattered, whereas Yiwu's compact layout ensures the farthest markets are only a 20-minute drive apart. To date, Yiwu has conducted trade with over 230 countries and regions, hosting the annual Yiwu International Commodities Fair.

5. Who Buys in Yiwu and What Do They Sell?

Most buyers operate offline businesses. Regular visitors are chain store owners and wholesalers from Africa, the Middle East, and Southeast Asia. Many African wholesalers are so familiar with the market that they effortlessly select goods, shipping them directly to local showrooms and warehouses for further distribution.

Merchants with showrooms typically supply local retail stores and small wholesalers; some also operate city-center shops. For instance, many of our Sri Lankan clients in the apparel sector maintain their own stores for distribution and local promotion.

Most buyers purchase ready-made or stocks in bulk rather than customizing. They typically select ready-made goods: "I want this, that," specifying carton quantities—5 boxes, 10 boxes—with simple processes and no customization.

Note: The Yiwu International Trade City generally has high minimum order quantities (MOQs) and suppliers are not adept at customization. Most only agree to private labeling. If you require logo printing or custom packaging boxes/cards, most suppliers will decline.

Collaborating with a Yiwu agent is an excellent solution. Many buyers communicate customization needs directly to agents, such as having us guide you through the market, translate, and handle custom printing with dedicated factories.

6. Selecting the Right Supplier

First, clarify exactly what you want to buy—do not wander aimlessly, or you will exhaust yourself without results. Create a product list first, then use our maps and guides to locate the corresponding zone.

You can also use Yiwugo (Yiwu Purchase), an online supplier directory, to check vendor information, in-market locations, and contact details (email, phone, WeChat). Many experienced buyers have the Yiwugo app installed for 360° virtual store tours.

Language barriers are minimal. Most vendors speak basic English (price, cheap, good). Point at items, and they will quote prices on a calculator.

However, if you need to discuss production techniques or develop your own brand, hiring a professional translator is necessary to ensure smooth communication. Translation costs are approximately $45/day, covering only in-market communication; post-market order processing, inspection, and shipping are not included.

For large-scale procurement, customization, quality control, and international shipping, it is best to engage us for full assistance. Since similar suppliers cluster together, price comparison is straightforward—check 10–20 stores for the same item to understand the price range. Always remember the stall number (the best method is to photograph the price and business card together on your phone), or you may never find it again.

7. Payment Methods

For small purchases (a few hundred dollars), vendors typically only accept CNY cash; a few accept USD.

To avoid bank procedures, you may exchange USD to CNY at nearby hotels at rates slightly lower than banks.

For large orders (thousands or tens of thousands of USD), most buyers use T/T wire transfers to their agent, who then pays the vendor. Usually, only a 15–30% deposit is required, with the balance paid before shipment.

Some buyers work directly with vendors using the same deposit/balance method, depending on your specific agreement.

8. Inspection and Shipping

For small quantities you carry back (e.g., a carton of fashion accessories), simply have the vendor deliver the goods to your hotel after payment.

For large orders, most buyers hire agents to handle procurement, quality inspection, warehousing, and shipping.

Some buyers work directly with freight forwarders: Place an order at the stall, then have the vendor deliver goods to the forwarder's warehouse. These forwarders specialize in serving Middle Eastern and African buyers, handling only container loading and shipping, not inspection.

This model relies heavily on buyer-seller trust. Many African buyers prefer to inspect and supervise loading personally in Yiwu.

If you are from a country along the Yixin'ou Railway route, you may also choose rail transport. The "Yixin'ou" train departs from Yiwu via:

Kazakhstan → Russia → Belarus → Poland → Germany → France → Madrid

Rail transport saves nearly half the time of sea freight, with costs only ½ (or lower) of air freight.

9. Complete Wholesale Guide

  1. If you require diverse categories and styles with moderate quantities, centralized procurement in Yiwu saves significant sourcing time.
  2. If your requirements are single-category with massive quantities, sourcing directly from core industrial belt factories yields superior profit margins.
  3. If quality and branding are priorities, engage a professional procurement agent for domestic assistance with purchasing, quality checks, deadline supervision, and logistics.
